How does it work ? back to top
WebPublisher extracts selected calendar and contact information from your Outlook and generates a HTML website so you can access your calendar and contacts from anywhere via the Internet.
The website is either published to a local file server (Intranet) or to an Internet server via FTP.
What is FTP ? back to top
File Transfer Protocol.
This is the way your computer "talks" to the Internet server when it is transferring files through the Internet.
Do I need my own server and leased line for this ? back to top
No, all you need is a simple home page with FTP access. You usually get this from your Internet Service Provider and it is probably included in your Internet Service Subscription.
In your subscription papers, there should be a FTP username and FTP password, otherwise contact your Internet Service Provider.
The FTP username and password has to be entered into WebPublisher before you can upload the website.
You can also use one of the many free home page services on the Internet. Here's just mentioned a few of them: www.xoom.com, www.geocities.com, www.freeservers.com, www.webprovider.com
How does it work with my homepage ? back to top
In the FTP host address you specify the domain name of your webserver (www.mydomain.com).
In the FTP root folder you specify the homepage root folder of the FTP site. Usually this is one of the following four (check with your subscription):
/public_html
/pub
/wwwroot
/The last one is used if the homepage root folder is the same as the FTP root folder (most common on free websites).
Example with the Yahoo Geocities free homepage:
When you have properly set up a homepage at Geocities, you have the following data:
Yahoo Username: my_name
Yahoo Password: my_password
Homepage address: www.geocities.com/mynameIn WebPublisher you use enter these informations like this:
FTP Host: ftp.geocities.com
FTP User: my_name
FTP Password: my_password
FTP root folder: /Now, when you have published, you can access the calendar from the homepage address: www.gocities.com/myname/wpo
Finally enter your initials in the login page and you are up and running.
Note: Use a FTP Client if you want to browse the contents of the FTP server. www.cuteftp.com is one of the many FTP clients you can use for this.
Does it interfere with my existing website ? back to top
All files is placed in the subfolder WPO on your website, so it should not interfere with existing web data, unless you have your own folder called WPO.
If you have an existing folder called WPO, then you must make a new subfolder (e.g. PRIVATE) and refer to this subfolder as FTP root folder instead. Using the example with Geocities from the previous topic, you can now access it from www.geocities.com/myname/private/wpo
How secure is my data ? back to top
If you feel your data (Calendar and Contacts) should be protected, you can use the password protection on the General Settings page in WebPublisher. The security level is limited, but yet powerful if you take some care.
There is a simple JavaScript password protection build-in to the WebPublisher which makes the pages secure, unless someone can guess your username and password.
Be careful about the password you choose. Do not use the same password you use for other things, as the password can be visible in the Address Line of your browser - especially in new browsers where the Address Line has a history of previously visited pages.
So if you access it from "outside" computers, in school, library, other companies or whatever, remember that the password can be exposed here via the browser's history.
We are working on an improvement to this, so if you feel a special need for better security, please click here to mail your suggestion to us.
